Why Do We Call This Good Friday?

Have you ever thought of that question? Before becoming a Christian, I wondered what could be so good about being nailed and dieing on a cross. Why would anyone celebrate a day when someone was treated so horribly? I could understand celebrating Jesus’ resurrection and making Easter a good day, but dieing just didn’t seem such a joyous occasion.
It took me becoming a Christian, studying the bible, and seeing God’s prophesies about the coming Christ to open my eyes as to how good it was for US, for sinners, that Jesus hung on that tree. His whole life was fulfilling God’s promise to His fallen creation, His ultimate plan of salvation for you and me.
The cross was the ultimate act of Godly love to bring us back to a relationship with our Heavenly Father. Jesus was God incarnate on this earth, walking, talking, living and dieing with us, to give us not only a way to salvation, but to show us how we should live as His children.
The cross was the final act, in human flesh, that poured the sealing wax on the covenant with Adam and Eve, Abraham Isaac and Jacob, David, Ruth, Mary and Joseph and all the people in the bible. Easter morning when Jesus rose in a glorified body, was God’s royal seal pressed in the wax, sealing His victory over Satan.
Good Friday, to me, is celebrating Jesus fulfilling His earthly promise. Two thirds of our proclamation of faith in Him, the death and burial took place on that day. His work on earth as human was finished, now only glory was ahead.
Easter morning was the third event in our proclamation of faith, the resurrection! This promise is what all our beliefs surround. A resurrection with Christ in heaven could not have happened without that cross so long ago on a Friday in Jerusalem. Yes, it was a Good Friday after all.
