Being Thankful

What does being thankful really mean? Do we just say “thanks” or maybe “Thank You” or even say “appreciate it” out of habit, or do we really think about the things we should be thankful for.

When someone gives us a gift, are we  surprised and thankful that the person thought enough of us to spend their time and resources to search out what they thought you would like or need, and maybe even spending extra to get wrapping paper and wrapping it, placing a bow on top?

Or, if it is a card, how they spent their time looking and reading different ones that said what they wanted to say and even wrote a note to you inside? Sometimes there may be money or a gift card included, which they had to take from their paycheck, but gladly gave to you.

Maybe they are good with their hands and made something for you, a labor of skill and love. If they can cook, then treating you with their famous recipe may be in order.

Do we really take the time to think about what it takes for someone to give us a gift? At birthdays, Christmas and other occasions, have we just come to expect and not really appreciate the effort involved and the thought it took?

I ask because this Thanksgiving, we should all really think about the blessings and gifts God has given us. First and foremost is the Gift of Salvation through His son Jesus Christ. Then for the parents, no matter the circumstances, because the gift of life is precious and God knew you before you were born.

We need to be thankful for a roof over our heads, no matter how big or small, food to eat and a God who loves us. Think about the things you need to be thankful for, then pray for those less fortunate.
